Macro

I use to have a "point and shoot" that had pretty good macro settings. My fancy new camera has none! However, I thought I remembered that he dad a macro.....but was it for his Cannon or his Nikon?

I rummaged through my dads old camera equipment. First lens I found was a macro....for the Nikon. Oh well....I thought, while I was here, I see what Cannon lens he had....BINGO!!! He had a macro. I don't know a lot about Macro lenses. This one looks like a mini zoom lens. It goes from 1:1 to 1:4. I took a variety of images in varying conditions (flowers in wind, lighting) This could be a really Fun tool.

Architechure

Finally...spring is in the air......I set out for Faust Park...the goal....shoot one of the older buildings in the "Village." The park was full of people..kids all over the place. People on benches, people under trees, everywhere - people. Great sunny, warm day...Couldn't believe it... NONE, ZERO, NOT ANY of the building were open...locked up tighter that a vault.....headed for the office.....locked up too.....headed for the carousel...that's right...locked up...last chance...the Butterfly House.

OPEN!!! Not what I planned on...but its what I had. First thought.....ISO - don't get yelled at for that again. I used mostly 200 - 400. White balance...played with it some.....tried same shot with several ISO. Considered focal length. Sat down and reread about Auto bracketing. I think I am going to love HDR.

While this is building seems to be a popular photo-op. I think it offers less variety. Still I had fun, tried to think to different ways to look at the building....the actual butterfly house offered views of the structure thru trees and shrubs, reflections against the sky, mist in the air.
Some shots worked...some not so much. Still kind of like shooting with film. If I got one or two good shots per roll ...I figured I had a good day. The difference now is I don't think about the $$/shot of the mistakes I make.

Photo Journalism

For this assignment, I decided to record the day of my dad's memorial service which was Friday February 12, 2010. Lots of family was coming and I was doing a brunch before the service. No pressure there.

OnThursday the snow hit the two major parts of the Country that my family was lived: The North East and Dallas. Half the family made it. Since I was working on the brunch as well as photographing it...it was easier to use auto white balance.

The color shift is evident sometimes, but overall it wasn't as bad as I expected. That's one of the things I like about this class....its OK to make mistakes or have camera problems ... they are a learning opportunity. With film...I always was happy if I had one or two good shots. With digital I can take a lot more, but the ratio of good images to total images is still similar. I notice I still often don't take the time to really look at all of what I am including (or leaving out). My pictures seem to be all over the place. Some well composed and others just a crap shoot.
I'd like to blame that on the NEW camera....but I shoot then think -- good
thing its a camera and not a gun.

White Balance

Not much to say here. I think the effect of white balance is more obvious in the pink and white flower, than in the Orange.
